big blue for a little green

big blue for a little green  I went to Ikea the other day to get a new bookshelf and some chocolate covered caramel candy, and was pleasantly surprised at checkout. Ikea is beginning to charge customers 5 cents for a plastic bag (59 cents buys you a re-usable bag.) Charging for bags in grocery stores is something that I grew up with in Europe, but probably seems really uncommon here in the US. Well, I think it's awesome that Ikea is starting to charge for plastic bags. Re-usable grocery bags are already popping up right and left, and once consumers get financially rewarded (or punished when not) for bringing their own bags, they will. I assume that Ikea is probably partially doing this, because green is cool right now. But that doesn't matter. The pay-for-your-grocery-bags trend is here to stay.

I think they’ve been doing this for as long as I’ve been going there… 6 years or so.

No way? This was my first visit to their Portland store, but I know as a fact that they didn’t do this in Los Angeles (where, by the way, I purchased my entire collection of “birch effect veneer furniture”). I will send one of my LA staff members to investigate immediately.

I would say I’m about 99% sure because I remember my fist time there and them charging for the bag and me thinking “oh, like in germany”
