I am not Jewish. But many of my best friends are. And I have heard lots of awesome stories about Jewish mothers.
Now I have my own.
As you might now and if you don’t then you probably don’t know me, I run a website called IdeaMensch, which for all you single Jewish men, would make a heck of a username on jdate.
A few months ago I was contacted by a mother of five from Israel who had some ideas and suggestions on how to make IdeaMensch better. Her name is Susie. I get a lot of emails every day regarding IdeaMensch, but hers stood out because of the thought, intelligence and sincerity put into it.
It really made me think, and I actually got started in implementing a lot of her advice. She has given me about 7 years worth of advice and ideas, so I am a bit behind.
Susie emails me about 20-30 times per week and while at times I can get overwhelmed by the the sheer number of emails and ideas she throws at me. Susie likes to email. But I’d be a fool to not listen closely to every single one of them.
I mean, it’s incredible. Here is this woman I’ve never met, who lives in a completely different part of this world, who gets no compensation yet who spends at least 10 hours a week thinking about how and making IdeaMensch better. Oh, and she also works as an ER nurse and yes, has five kids.
Susie is busy. And smart. And incredibly kind.
But that isn’t what this blog post is about.
It’s about you.
It’s about your work.
It’s about doing something that has purpose.
It’s about creating value to others.
It’s about building something that good people can get behind.
It’s about spending your days on something that not only you, but also others can believe in.
So as you choose you next employer, as you write your next book, as you start your next business – the one question you need to ask yourself is this…
Can you get a jewish mother excited about what you’re about to do?
If the answer is yes, go forward with it. If she has five kids and the answer is still yes, move faster.
In turning IdeaMensch into my full-time career, there are many indicators that might or might not point to me being successful with it.
None is more important to me than Susie’s emails.
